Recently came across a link to a lecture by stretch armstrong & bobbito from the Red Bull Music Academy’s lecture series, which you can view HERE. The lecture was part of an amazing week of music in the bay area in January 2012: Stretch & Bobbito dj set, Gary Bartz performing live with Aloe Blacc and Bilal, and a DJ set by Masters at Work, amongst many other performances.
The Stretch Armstrong & Bobbito Show was crucial in catapulting rap music to the forefront of the multi-billion dollar music industry in the 90’s. It’s ironic… actually very fitting given the history of Hip-Hop, that the show was so instrumental in making hip-hop a global power house, given that it was broadcast on a non-commercial college radio station….i.e. Stretch and Bobbito were volunteers on the air every thursday night from 1am-5am.
The list of unsigned artists that appeared on their show easily adds to billions of dollars and immeasurable influence world wide: Jay-Z, Big L, Camron, Mase, Biggie Smalls, Wu-Tang, Nas, Organized Konfusion (Pharaoh Monch & Prince Po), Big Pun, Mobb Deep, etc….and these are just the artists that were unsigned when they appeared on the show.
The 90’s in rap music was an amazing era, and I’m not only saying that because this was the first musical movement I experienced as a tween/teen. When love and passion for music are driving forces for the icons (Stretch & Bobbito) of a movement…..you can’t go wrong.
Check the links below for footage from Stretch & Bobbito’s 20th anniversary show in New York back in January 2011. Salute!
